Your Windows PC Is Slow? Fix It Without Spending ₹1

12 June 2026

Your laptop isn't dead, it's just drowning in junk. These free fixes revived my 5-year-old machine — no shop visit, no new parts, zero rupees spent.

You know the drill. You press the power button, go make chai, come back, and the laptop is still thinking about it. You double-click Chrome. Nothing. Click again. Now two windows open after thirty seconds. We've all been there, and honestly, it's maddening.

Here's the thing though — most slow Windows PCs aren't dying. They're drowning in junk. I've fixed dozens of "useless" laptops for friends and family, and 8 out of 10 times the fix cost exactly zero rupees. Let me show you what actually works.

Kill the startup apps first

This is the single biggest win. No contest.

Every app you've ever installed wants to launch at boot. Spotify, Steam, that PDF reader from 2022 — all of them eating RAM before you've even opened anything.

  • Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager
  • Go to the Startup apps tab
  • Disable everything except your antivirus

Trust me, nothing breaks. Apps still open when you click them. They just stop ambushing your boot time.

Uninstall the bloatware

New laptops in India ship with an absurd amount of pre-installed rubbish. McAfee trials, "PC optimizer" tools, games you never asked for.

Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps and be ruthless. If you don't recognise it and it's not from Microsoft or your laptop brand's driver tools, it can go. That McAfee trial that keeps nagging you? Especially that. Windows Defender is genuinely good now — a second antivirus just slows everything down.

Give your C drive room to breathe

A nearly-full drive is a slow drive. Windows needs free space to think.

  • Search "Storage settings" and switch on Storage Sense
  • Run Disk Cleanup (yes, the old one — it still works brilliantly) and clear system files too
  • Shift photos and videos to another drive or a free cloud account

Keep at least 15–20% of your C drive empty. Your PC will thank you.

Turn off the eye candy

Honest opinion: Windows animations are not worth the lag on an older machine.

Search "adjust the appearance and performance of Windows", pick "Adjust for best performance", then re-tick "Smooth edges of screen fonts" so text doesn't look horrible. On a 4GB RAM machine, this change is genuinely noticeable.

Restart properly (no, really)

Here's something most people don't know — clicking Shut Down doesn't fully shut down Windows. Fast Startup keeps it half-asleep. So that laptop you "switch off daily"? It may not have truly restarted in weeks.

Once a week, click Restart instead. It clears out memory leaks properly. Sounds silly, works wonders.

What NOT to do

  • Don't install registry cleaners or "RAM boosters". No cap, they make things worse, and some are straight-up malware.
  • Don't disable the page file because some YouTube video said so.
  • Don't avoid Windows updates forever — outdated drivers cause more slowdowns than updates ever will.

When free fixes aren't enough

Did all of this and the PC still crawls? Then the bottleneck is probably hardware — usually an old spinning hard disk. An SSD upgrade is the closest thing to buying a new laptop at a fraction of the price. Extra RAM helps too, especially if you live in Chrome tabs like the rest of us.

If you ever reach that point, have a look at our collection — we keep SSDs, RAM and accessories that won't burn a hole in your pocket. But no pressure. Try the free stuff first. There's a decent chance your "old" laptop surprises you.
