Smart Home Under ₹5000: What Actually Works in India
19 June 2026
Honestly, I spent months overthinking smart home stuff. Turns out a ₹799 smart plug was all I needed to start. Here's what's worth buying in 2026.
The ₹799 Plug That Changed How I Live
Okay so last summer, my geyser was on for three hours while I was stuck in traffic. I couldn't turn it off. That one incident made me buy my first smart plug — and honestly, it's been downhill (in the best way) ever since.
You don't need a fancy Alexa-enabled fridge or a ₹20,000 smart lock to call your home "smart". Start small. Start cheap. Here's what's actually worth your money in 2026.
Smart Plugs — Start Here, Trust Me
Smart plugs are the easiest entry point. You just plug them into your existing socket, connect them to an app, and boom — your dumb appliance is now voice-controlled.
Best picks right now:
- Wipro 16A Smart Plug (₹799–₹999) — Works with Alexa and Google Home. Has energy monitoring which is genuinely useful. One of the most reliable in Indian conditions (voltage fluctuations and all).
- Syska Smart Plug (₹700–₹900) — Budget-friendly, works great for fans, lamps, and phone chargers. App is decent.
- Amazon Smart Plug (₹1,299) — If you're already in the Alexa ecosystem, this one's plug-and-play. Literally five minutes to set up.
One thing people don't tell you: get a 16A plug if you're using it for a geyser or AC. The 10A ones are fine for lamps and small appliances but can trip if you push them.
Smart Bulbs — The Easiest Visual Upgrade
Here's the thing about smart bulbs — they make a room look dramatically different at night. Warm white for Netflix, bright white for studying. You don't realise how much lighting affects your mood until you can control it.
- Syska Smart LED (₹499–₹699) — Good colour range, solid app support, works offline once set up.
- Wipro Garnet Smart Bulb (₹599) — Slightly better build quality. Worth the extra hundred.
- Philips WiZ (₹999–₹1,499) — Pricier but the colour accuracy is noticeably better. If you're a WFH person on video calls, this matters.
No cap, I'd start with two smart bulbs in the bedroom and one smart plug for the living room fan. That's it. That's your starter pack.
What About Voice Assistants?
You don't need one, but they make the whole thing way more fun.
- Amazon Echo Dot (5th Gen, ₹3,499) — The most popular choice in India. Great sound for the price, works with most Indian smart devices.
- Google Nest Mini (₹3,499) — Better for people in the Google ecosystem (Gmail, Calendar, YouTube). Slightly better sound than older Dots.
Honestly, if you already use Alexa on your phone, the Echo Dot is the natural next step.
What I'd Skip (For Now)
Smart locks and smart cameras sound cool but they're either overpriced, require a hub, or have app support that's... not great in India yet. Give it another year.
Also skip any no-brand plugs under ₹400 on quick commerce. They look fine but they get warm, they drop WiFi, and some of them don't play nice with Indian voltage.
